Work stress on teachers, namely the teacher-occupational stress, is a new research field of the current education science. Research made in this field has gradually kept increasing and a number of achievements have been obtained since 1970. Many research results have identified that the teachers are an occupational group that function under conditions of a high stress .The long lasted stress on occupation would affect the teacher' s mental health seriously, so that it would not only lead to the education and teaching with the lowering of quantity and efficiency, but also would produce the disadvantageous influence to the student' s healthy personality.The mental health is not only the core factor of the teacher' s quality, but also the foundation and guarantee for improving the general makings of teachers and the quality of educational teaching. Some experts previously point out: " we should pay attention to the mental state of the teachers. Without mentally healthy teachers, there would be no children of sound personality. " Therefore, to study the mental health of the teachers and improve the teachers' mental health level will not only be the requirement of the teachers' occupational characters and the times but also the need of development of the teacher themselves.In our country, with the continuously educational reform deepening, the work stress problem of the teachers is gradually outstanding. Due to such reasons as entrance examination, high school teachers are likely to be confronted with stress different from those of other teachers and show some mental problems of various degrees. Accordingly, studies about the work stress on and mental state of high school teachers is theoretically and practically significant.This text aims to investigate and study the work stress on and mental health of high school teachers and to find out the relations between the stressors and mental problem. Based on the reference to data both at home and abroad and interview with and questionnaire investigation on high school teachers as well, a scale named 'Scale For Work Stress on High School Teachers' is developed, which is composed'of 52 items after repeated measurement and revise. The statistics test showed that the scale could validly discriminate the teacher cohort of the high school from those in teachers' technical secondary school, embodying the characters of the high school teacher' s work stressors. Both the reliability and validity of the scale meet the demands of workout.Investigation has been made on 418 high school teachers by use ofSymptom Scale (SCL-90) and self-made Scale For Work Stress on High SchoolTeachers at the same time. The results are as follows:1. In general, high school teachers' feeling of work stress is relativelystrong, of whom 54.5% feel higher or high stress and only 11. 5% feeleither low stress or no stress. Meanwhile they share a worse state ofmental health with 52. 6% showing bad psychological reaction of variousdegrees and 4. 7% clearly having questions of mental health.2. The level of mental health of high school teachers is remarkably lower than that of average domestic population. This difference is represented by such symptoms as physical symptom, imposition, sensibilities to human relations, melancholy, hostility and so on. Teachers from different groups differ in symptom. The difference between teachers either from high schools located in cities and towns or from key high schools and common high schools turns out to be rather significant.3. Stresses emerging from work burden, examination, entering a higher school, social status and income is the major source of the work stress on high school teachers. The general feeling of the stress of teachers from high schools located in cities and towns or from key high schools and common high schools, along with the difference of most other factors, varies sharply and significantly.4.
