To satisfy the requirement of the new syllabus for English curriculum, and to change the present teaching situation, that is, low accountability of language teaching and the students' incapability to use language in real communication, the thesis, on the basis of empirical research, advocates that situational approach, which combines the merits of many popular teaching methods and therefore is situational approach in a new sense, is an effective way to improve teaching quality and students' language performance. The thesis includes eight parts:I. IntroductionHaving reviewed extensively the literatures of modern schools of foreign language teaching and surfed the internet for related information about the recent development of Situational Approach, the writer finds that there are many articles on situational teaching, but how to design an appropriate situation for language learning is still a problem to be solved, which is the reason why the author takes it as the topic of the thesis.II. Theoretical basis of designation of language situationBased on theories of language acquisition and constructivism learning and so on, the thesis illustrates that the ability of language use can only be improved in the authentic or simulated situation.III. Situational Approach is an effective method to improve students' comprehensive ability of language use.IV. The principles of how to design an appropriate situationThe thesis argues that a few principles must be obeyed if an appropriate situation is to be designed on the basis of theories and aims of language teaching.V. Some methods of designation of language situationThere are many ways to design a situation for language learning, but the thesis focuses on the following means due to the space of the article:1. pictures2. objects3. body language4. games5. multimedia6. task-based teachingVI. How to design an appropriate situationWhen setting up a situation for language learning, one should take the following elements into consideration in addition to the principles outlined above:1. The situations should be designed in accordance with different phases of language development.2. The situation should be so designed to facilitate learning of form and meaning of the target language.VII.
