The relationship between population and economy is close, and the development of population must adapt to development of economy. Economic demography explores the correlation of population and economy. The development of economic demography in eastern and western regions is not balanced. Economy of West lag behind East, and quality of population is lower than that of East. Altogether, there is great difference compared with East. To set up a well-off society in China, coordinated development between East and West must be fulfilled, and the predominance of both zones must be exerted. The data in this thesis are based on TABULAYION ON THE 2000 POPULATION CENSUS OF THE PEOPLE'S REPUBULIC OF CHINA and CHINA STATISTICAL YERABOOK. This thesis contrasts several diversities of economic demography between eastern and western regions, and following the analytical result, advances some feasible advice. Because population includes population quantity and population quality, the effect of population on economy lies in two sides: effect of quantity and quality. Living standard of residents intensively reflects the relationship between population and economy. This thesis contrastively analyzes four aspects of economic demography between eastern and western regions, quantity of population, quality of population, marriage and procreation, living standard of residents. The income gap between East and West is one of the chief factors causing the trans-regional population floating, which is in turn one of the important factors affecting the different economic development among regions. Large numbers of people flow from West to East, which leads to the rise of average growth rate of population. Reasonable talent policy must be adopted. For example, one of effective means is that states organize the floating population to reduce floating cost. The influence of population quality on economy focuses on effect of culture diathesis, moreover, difference of educational level embodies the effect of culture diathesis on economy. The average schooling year of nine provinces in East is 7.94 years, and 6.73 years in West. On the whole, the average schooling year of floating population is higher than that of total population. To develop economy of West and shorten the gap between East and West, the key is to increase finance budget on education. Furthermore, talent policy should be established to attract more persons with ability.Labor force distribution in eastern and western regions is different. Compared with eastern areas, in west, working population in primary industry is in excess of its capacity. From labor productivity of three industries in each province, the gap of labor productivity in tertiary industries is most remarkable and it is inconspicuous in secondary industry. For coordinated development, tertiary industries in West must be developed rapidly. Most provinces of west region especially minorities areas and Guangdong have high fertility. It indicates that conception of birth and fertility policy affect fertility greatly. In fact, high fertility will add the burden to labor force and hinder the development of economy and elevation of living standard. So some strong fertility policies must be applied, such as giving more punishment to those who intend to give birth more than permission, regulating the fertility policy to minority, encouraging behaviors of marriage and give birth at a comparatively mature age.The difference of living standard of residents reflects the difference of population economy between eastern and western regions. At the beginning, Engel coefficient was weighed the gap between eastern and western regions living standard of resident, but the result is not satisfying. So it is not appropriate to scale living standard of residents by single index. To reflect the gap exactly, fifteen indexes have been selected. Through factor analysis, they are clustered four factors: income and payout factor, environment of living factor, medical treatment factor and structure of consum...
