At present, there exist various problems in middle school with English teaching and learning, such as teacher-centeredness, negating the development of language ability while overstressing the knowledge of language, ignoring grammar and vocabulary. The reading materials for the students are monotonous, unable to stimulate their interests in reading. Psychological, linguistic, as well as cultural limitations prove to be restricting students' reading efficiency. In view of these problems and the current situation of the teaching of English reading at middle schools, we carried out a theoretical and empirical study, putting forward strategies for efficient reading, including pre-reading strategies, while-reading strategies and post-reading strategies. We hold that the key to improving the efficiency of the teaching of reading lies in finding the starting point and striking a good balance between the teaching of knowledge and that of skills. The instructor needs to construct a students-centred class with the purpose of motivating the students to find, construct and even create the meaning. The study is aimed at improving the students' accuracy in reading comprehension via teaching about the monitoring strategy, discourses, language sense, language chunks and language situation and increasing students' reading speed via improving the students' reading habit. Based on cooperative learning theory and constructive learning theory, we suggest a cooperative reading model, a peer reading model, a pre-organizing reading model and a picture organizing reading model in the hope of eventually enhancing the students' creativity and critical thinking ability, which are the destination of the teaching of reading.
