Being an ideal of university education and a pattern of talent cultivation, general education takes the free-development and self-perfection of human beings as its starting point and aims to cultivate fully-developed talents that are noble in spirit, rich in humanity, profound in knowledge, high-bred in nurture, innovative in thinking and strong in social responsibility. In recent years, many universities in China have attempted to put general education into practice at the undergraduate level. However, if general education wants to go further, it inevitably involves the issues of curriculum provision and management, which are the sticking points for general education to rise up from ideal to practice.By using many kinds of social scientific methods from the perspective of curriculum and teaching methodology, with the assistance of concrete case study, this paper takes the curriculum provision and management of general education in Japanese universities as the research object and gives a summarization of its experience based on the study of its history and current development in the two periods of stage before and after the 1990s. Then by the analysis of concrete cases, it goes on to investigate the current situation of the curriculum provision and management of general education in Chinese universities, on the basis of which this paper proposes some suggestions with the experience of Japan as reference.
