In the teaching of Information Technology to junior middle school students, we find that most of the students are not active or positive because of the limitation of their age and the teaching materials. However, in this science and technology rapidly developing era, life-long learning becomes more and more important for everyone, especially the middle school students. To cultivate their life-long learning ability, we have to first improve their self-study ability, which is also one of the focuses of the recent teaching innovation. So taking into consideration of the characteristics of the course as well as the demand of social development, we try to set up a new teaching model centering on self-study in the Information Technology course to junior middle school students. This paper first gives an introduction to the purpose of the research, the concepts, the pedagogic theories and definitions related. Secondly it describes how to set up the self-study teaching model according to the characteristics of this course and the author's own teaching practice on the basis of the similar experience home and abroad. And then it provides the content of the model, the procedure, the main features and the comparison with traditional teaching models. At last, it gives a case to elaborate the whole teaching process, and shows the fruitful result of the new model. This paper is based on an integration of theoretical research and teaching practice. It aims at setting up a new teaching model to cultivate the junior middle students' self-study ability in the course of Information Technology. And it's also a good attempt to arouse the students' interest in study and meet their need of individual study.
