Classroom teaching is one of the best approaches to popularizing music education in the middle school. Meanwhile, school music education is mainly carried out by means of different activities in classroom teaching. Since The Full-time Compulsory Education Music Curriculum Standards (Experimental Edition) was formulated and implemented in 2002, great changes have taken place in music classroom teaching, especially in the areas such as teaching contents, classroom activities, teaching methods and means. The traditional teaching model in which teachers do most of the speaking has disappeared. Instead, students have more chances to take part in classroom activities and they can discuss with their teachers in a lively and harmonious atmosphere. Teachers often encourage students to think and explore more by themselves. Thus, students tend to like music lessons better than before and they show more interest in music study. As a result, the teaching effect has been remarkably improved. It is over seven years since The Standards was implemented in Nanjing. During this period, the leading officials in City Teaching & Research Section made the most of the abilities of key teachers to organize various activities, including lectures, seminars, teaching displaying and basic teaching skills contests. These activities have promoted the study of the 3D goals presented in The Standards, helped teachers to better explore, arrange, analyze and make full use of the existing teaching resources. At the same time, more and more excellent teachers have been developed. However, the curriculum reform is a process of continuous exploration, practice and reflection. Problems remain, such as teachers' misunderstanding of the new standards, poor teaching designs, misuse of multimedia and indefinite predominant role of music course. How to solve these problems well is of practical significance for teachers to achieve teaching goals and improve teaching efficiency. This thesis intends to clarify the basic theory of music course as well as its character and value by looking into music classroom teaching in junior middle schools in Nanjing. An experiment has been conducted in sixteen different schools, which involves many aspects, like students' after-school activities, their motivation and means of learning music and teachers' basic qualities as well as their understanding of The Standards. The methods used in the experiment includes filling in questionnaires investigations, listening to class, talks between students and teachers, etc. The data has been dealt with by the Spss software system to analyze the present situation of music classroom teaching in junior middle schools in Nanjing and summarize the achievements and deficiencies of music teaching practice. The purpose is to help improve music classroom teaching efficiency and promote the development of music education. The thesis mainly consists of the following parts:Introduction: This part states the background and present situation of studying music classroom teaching in junior middle school, apart from expressing the aim and significance of doing the research.Part One: This part introduces the changes in the goals of music curriculum standards and defines the contents of the new standards as well as the basic theory of music classroom teaching.Part Two: Through investigating the present situation of music education in junior middle school, this part analyzes the data, presents the problems in music classroom teaching and provides possible solutions.Part Three: This part presents and analyzes the situation of carrying out music teaching and research activities.
