In today’s world, competition exists between highly-talented people. Ensuring theeducational quality of these people is becoming more and more important, especially as theyare trained in basic skills and strategies. Therefore, good education has become a focal pointfor each country as they face a world of competition. In1999, in order to improve the overallstrength of the nation, in light of the societal and competitive needs of the new century, Chinabegan a new round of curriculum reform. From1999to2001, China formulated new physicaleducation (P.E.) and health class standards. In September2001, at experimental sites aroundthe country, pilot projects were launched. The new educational standards were put into effectnationwide in2005, deepening and broadening China’s P.E. curriculum. This educationalreform is an important part of world educational reform, and is a strong response to the globaleducational reform which began in the1980s.P.E. class is an important part of a nation’s fundamental education; it is a key part of aschool’s education. P.E. develops students’ physique, athletic ability, psychological health,ability to associate with and adapt to society, teamwork and cooperation, to name a few areas.P.E. has always been considered an excellent, important educational method. It occupies anindelible position because of its ability to increase both individual physique and nationalcohesiveness. P.E. class, as the vehicle for implementing physical education at a school, isreceiving increasingly widespread attention. How should one’s physique be improved? Howcan health-awareness be strengthened? How should exercise be conducted scientifically? P.E.teaching is an important part of a school’s physical education; it is one of the most importantways of attaining P.E. goals and teaching objectives. Teaching is at the nucleus of China’s P.E.curriculum reforms; it is the main channel of school physical education and, consequently, isthe main channel for implementing character education. We should pay attention to the realstate and current conditions of P.E. teaching, in order to better implement character educationand continue P.E. reforms.This thesis, in light of the new course objectives, is based on the actual state of juniormiddle school P.E. classroom teaching. It starts by analyzing and researching the componentsof classroom teaching. The results of the survey show that most Changchun area juniormiddle school P.E. teachers understand the implications of the new course objectives and howto put them into effect in the classroom. The teachers are making positive changes in the roleof a teacher, adequately preparing for class, continuing to discover students’ interests andpotential in the classroom, using increasingly multi-faceted methods of evaluation, andmaking class more student-directed. Additionally, they are helping students enjoy P.E., making them more interested in learning. However, the survey also revealed many issues: forexample, too many students are arriving late for or leaving early from class; many teacherseither do not write lesson plans, or they copy or download them. Classroom rules are nottaken seriously or put into practice; equipment is often not utilized. Such problems must beresolved. This thesis aims to objectively and comprehensively identify problems in currentP,E. teaching, and the sources of these problems. Finally, it will presents relevant ways toaddress these problems, providing reference material, valuable suggestions, and strategies. Asa result, guided by new educational ideas, Changchun area junior middle school P.E. teachingmay become more health-focused and orderly.
