A Comparative Study On The Efficiency Of Grain Production And Production Capacity In Jiangsu Province

With the advancement of the process of urbanization construction, a large number of rural population are transferring into non-agricultural population. The per capita cultivated land keeps reducing, but at the same time per capital grain demand increase dramatically in food production. The imbalance between supply and demand becomes a serious threat to food security in China. Jiangsu Province, which located in the middle and lower Yangtze River Plain, is one of China’s four major granaries. But the development is unbalanced in south, middle and north of Jiangsu. The research will have a very important significance on guiding the provincial and national grain production based on urbanization.On the basis of reviewing the related literature review, the paper is using the method of combining quantitative and qualitative analysis studying comprehensively and fully from two aspects, "quality" and "quantity" of grain production of Jiangsu Province by analyzing the efficiency of grain production and the capacity of production.Firstly, this paper used the Super Efficiency Data Envelopment Analysis model to calculate the efficiency of grain production about 13cities in Jiangsu province during 2002 to 2013, and then the model results were analyzed in the view of cross section data and time series analysis.Secondly, the research studies the result of the two models by using cross section data analysis and time series data analysis. The results of cross section data analysis of super efficiency DEA model show that, the efficiency of grain production in Jiangsu province is high efficiency in the south of Jiangsu and in north of Jiangsu food production efficiency is low. The time series data analysis results show that the grain production efficiency of the city has a positive relationship with the labor force and food crops planting area. Through factor analysis model we have the following conclusion:grain production ability is stronger in north of Jiangsu, but agriculture technology are relatively backward; while in south Jiangsu,grain production ability is,weaker, but agricultural production technology is advanced.Finally, according to the conclusion of the empirical analysis, by analyzing specific conditions and existing problems of grain production of the three areas, the south, the middle and the north of Jiangsu. The paper puts forward targeted suggestions with practical applicability on grain production of different regions.
