CNC flame cutting machines have been used more and more extensively in industries for their outstanding performance. However, the control systems of flame cutting machines made in China cannot compete with those imported from developed countries in many aspects, such as low efficiency, imperfect function, lacking of openness and so on. Most domestic CNC flame cutting machines are equipped with foreign control system. Therefore it is necessary to develop an efficient and stable CNC system for flame cutting machine.By analyzing the characteristics of flame cutting, this paper constructed an open architecture Dual-CPU CNC system which consists of industrial PC (IPC) and a GALIL motion controller. The system was designed in both aspects of hardware and software.Bus communication is used in the hardware design of the control system. GALIL motion controller is inserted into the PCI slot of IPC. The signal transmission between motion controller and servo driver is completed by the PICM-3900S interconnect module, to control the X, Y and cutting torch servo motors.The system software is developed in C# programming language in Visual Studio2008. The system software is divided into several functional modules including system configuration, document management, G code interpret, trajectory display, processing control. The real time functions of the CNC system were implemented by calling API functions of GALIL motion controller. Other function modules are also designed, such as emergency processing, manual operation and so on. In order to apply the system in different cutting environments, an automatic adjustment system of the cutting torch is designed by using fuzzy control.
