Facility Layout Problem(FLP) is one of the main issue to consider in the initial phase of production and system design of a enterprise. It started with the production of human, and it became more complex and important with the growing scale of the production. The emergence of virtual reality(VR) technology provides a new technical way to solve the increasingly complex problem. During the detailed design stage of the facility layout, the realistic three-dimensional visual simulation can be done for FLP through virtual reality technology. This way can effectively make up the shortcomings of the traditional layout approach included too abstract, not accurate enough and so on. Thereby this way can greatly improve the feasibility of the layout design to save investment cost and time.Firstly, this paper reviews the development process of FLP, analyzes the evolution of its technology solutions, describes virtual reality technology and its application, and discusses the feasibility and prospects of virtual reality technology used in facility layout problem. Then this paper focuses on the design and development of virtual facility layout system. To reduce the cost of system development and application and in the spirit of free sharing and collaboration of open source, this paper decided to explore the technical way to implement the virtual facility layout system in the field of open source software. This paper utilizes the open source three-dimensional graphics rendering engine OSG(OpenSceneGraph) and the open source GUI(Graphical User Interface) development library wxWidgets as the technical basis to design and develop the virtual facility layout system. And this paper adopts standard XML(Extensible Markup Language) technology to solve the information management problem of the system.Based on the above technologies, this paper designs the overall framework and detailed development plan of the virtual facility layout system and describes the principles and methods to achieve the key function in detail. Eventually this paper integrates and implements a virtual facility layout prototype system based on OSG. By this way, this paper intends to provide the enterprises a three-dimensional virtual environment to test the feasibility and potential problems of the layout design in the detailed design phase. Thereby enterprises can avoid the shortcomings of physical layout such as long cycle, high cost, low efficiency and so on.
