The application of IEC 61850 is the process of digital and networking substation system. This process has given the smart substation a new job and put a new request for testing and debugging of smart substation. This not only need to testing and verifying the hardware, software based on IEC 61850 and the configuration file, system data and model documents, but it is more important to test the overall performance of smart substation. There are no fully-digitalized substations testing equipment which use fiber network interface and the digital output. So the method and specification of smart substation testing need to be in-depth studied.In this paper, the key technology for smart substation is studied through the overall performance testing in substation which is the first smart substation in Chongqing. Firstly, the conformance testing theory is analyzed. In view of traditional testing methods is inadequate, the conformance testing based on IEC 61850 is conducted, besides, the wrong analysis and abnormalities analysis are carried out as complementarities to the test. Specifically speaking, according to the abnormal phenomena the SMV message, GOOSE message and MMS message are analyzed to find out the wrong reason and modify the design for the substation.In the aspect of synchronization testing, the paper analyzes the factors affecting the synchronization precision and stability. According to factor which can be detected, the synchronization test platform is built. By this way, the synchronization error is analyzed.For the network performance testing, from the objective reality, the paper put forward the specific testing entry and testing method referring to the standard for acceptance of local area network and the demand in IEC 61850 for the network performance. The main testing items include switch throughput, throwing rate and the delay of tripping operation and closing operation using GOOSE.At last, the author summarizes the testing conclusion and advises for next work. Finally, the application outlook of smart substation and subsequent work are put forward.
