As the technology is advancing today, the pace of both people's life and product manufacturing has increased a lot. Therefore an improvement in the efficiency of the product development is highly demanded. Most traditional development methods prove to be outdated today, so people need a new method to design their products. Virtual Prototyping, based on computer technology, is undoubtedly one of the most promising ways to accelerate product development. The design methods of electric machines, which are basically the same as many years before, bear many shortcomings like: decentralized design process, unintuitive design pattern, repetitive and redundant work. All these defects render the methods inefficient and slow. In order to settle these problems, the author discussed a new method based on virtual prototyping to promote the development of electric machines using this technology. The author first discussed the worldwide development and characteristics of virtual prototyping, as well as the key techniques of its implementation. Then a new virtual prototype design platform for electric machines was proposed, which integrated the 3-D CAD software SolidWorks and the simulation functions from Matlab. This platform comprises 3-D modeling, assembly and its demonstration, dynamic simulation, and virtual experiments, which combined to constitute the entire procedure of motor design.Taking Disc Coreless Permanent Magnet DC Motor (DCPMDCM) as the research object, the author discussed how to implement motor design with virtual prototype technology, involving the realization of parameterized design, the assembly process simulation, the dynamic simulation and performance experiments of DCPMDCM. As the platform is quite complicated which consists of different software to support its functions, it is also important to develop a uniform storage system to store and manage all parameters and files throughout motor design process.
