The belt conveyor is a transporting equipment as traction and load-carrying bodies by belt. It is one of the biggest streamhandling machineries in delivery capacity. Its running resistance low, the movement steady and the function reliable are advantageous. It is possible to realize the continuous haulage under the condition of continuous loading, so it is widely used in national economic sectors. The belt conveyor with big dip angle,long belt and large load can damage the device of belt conveyor system and injure people, resulting in a long shutdown and major security accident. Therefore, it is much necessary to design a kind of broken belt catching device of belt conveyor. It can catch broken belt fast and relably.This paper summarizes the reasons for belt breaking and analyzes characteristics of the existing broken belt catcher. A dynamic model of belt conveyor was established by viscoelastic mechanics of belt. The process of the belt breaking was analyzed through the finite element model of belt conveyor.According to the belt breaking mechanism of the belt conveyor and the conventional detection techniques, a detection method based on the belt sag was presented. The formula of belt sag was derived. The feasibility and reliability of the method used in detecting belt breaking accident was analyzed. A new broken belt catching device called cross section broken belt catcher was designed based on the new detection method and the struture requirements of broken belt catcher. It is simple and relable. It is able to achieve to catch the broken belt well.At last, by analyzing the structural characteristics and working principles of the cross section broken belt catcher and combining with electrical control devices of belt conveyor, detection and feedback of the belt breaking signal was achieved, and the broken belt catcher was centralized controled.
