Using fermented core straw, cattle manure, vermiculite and peat substrate as component of mixed substrates. The four substrates were mixed in five ratios. Five different nursery media were taken to pepper plug seeding (Longjiao NO.2). The growth features, physiology features, gas exchange parameters and chlorophyll fluorescence parameters of pepper seedling were determined. The physical, chemical and nutrient element content characteristics of substrates were also studied in the growth period. The aim is to find the suitable proportion of compound medium in seeding pepper and to provide the basic theory of making use of fermented core straw. The results are as follows:1. With the decrease of grinding extent of core straw, the bulk density, total porosity, water-holding porosity increased, aeration porosity and WHP / AP were decreed.By mixed core straw, cattle manure, vermiculite and peat in different ratio, the bulk density of substrates was increased; WHP/ AP and water-holding porosity were increased. EC was decreased; the content of nutrient elements in composted corn straw and cattle manure were more abundant than in peat. The volume of cote straw and the substrate material and complex substrate shrink in different extent. The shrinkage is lower than substrate material.2. The pepper seeding of T4 emerged early and regularly. In the 60th, the plant height, root length , Shoot fresh weight, root dry weight and whole dry weight were highest; root activity, it were highest that the content of chlorophyll b, chlorophyll (a+b), soluble sugar in the pepper leaves ;stem diameter ,root fresh weight, healthy index, the content of chlorophyll a, soluble protein were higher than other treatment.3. During the growth period, with the time extension, the bulk density and total porosity increased gradually, pH increased in the early time then began to decreasing, and EC was higher than before. The macro N, alkali-hydrolysable N and available K in the substrates were decreased gradually. The macro N, Alkali-hydrolysable N and available K in the T4 were always highest in the seeding period. 4. The T4 mixed substrate V (peat): V(core straw): V(cattle manure): V(vermiculite)=2:2:4:2 ,its bulk density was 0.40g·cm-3,Total porosity was 65.82%,water retained porosity was 56.66%,aeration porosity was 9.16%. pH was 7.39 and EC was 1.13 ms·cm-1.Its physical and chemical characteristic was available, and it will be better for the pepper plug-seeding.
