At present, the development of Chinese economy assists the country to be under the spotlight. After suffering from the widespread global economic downturn, the strength of Chinese economy has been considered one of the strongest powers in the world. The newly coined economic terms are also of greater importance than ever before. As a translator, the choice of applying domestication or foreignization is becoming an increasingly vital issue when we are translating. The aim of the two strategies is to transmit the content of the source language to the target language, in order to convey the information to the target readers. Besides information, the translation should also carry the flavor of the cultures, because cultural communication is the ultimate goal. Thus the combination of both two approaches should be of great concern. This paper will explore the translation strategies of domestication and foreignization and how they are used to translate unique Chinese economic terms. First, I have to obtain background knowledge of how these terms come into being. I will pay special attention to our socialist market economy and political factors that affect the formation of the terms. Then I will analyze the terms by applying domestication and foreignization strategies, emphasizing on the advantages and obstacles of alienation. At last, I will investigate why foreignization with the assistance of domestication can help to preserve the Chinese characteristics.
