As an educational form in ancient China, school has made tremendous contributions to the popularity of primary education. In order to strengthen control in Yunnan, in addition to bureaucratization of native officers, the Qing government promoted to develop culture, education and economy. Setting up free schools was one of the important means. As the Government's promotion of the free schools, they were developed very rapidly with widely distributed numbers. The outstanding features in managements of teaching and fund raising enabled these schools to be model schools at border areas in the Qing DynastyDiscussing the changes of school in the Qing Dynasty, this thesis reveals that the running of free school in Yunnan started from the Kangxi Period, climaxed in the Yongzheng and the early Qianlong Period and continued to develop. The teaching contents and teaching subjects of free school education varied in the process of development, which has four characteristics. By exploring the connections and differences between free school and college, the thesis posits that there exist great differences in their teaching goal, teaching subjects and teaching contents. Compared with free school run by non-governmental organizations from Shandong province, officials of Yunnan free school and non-governmental capitals are closely linked. Free school authorities tend to be stricter in official management.
