Research On Translation Of Long Sentences From Chinese To English: Reflections On The Translation Of When He Was Young

The thesis explains the difference between English and Chinese sentences and the techniques of translating long sentences from Chinese to English by giving examples from When He Was Young written by Eileen Chang. As to the difference between English and Chinese sentences, English syntax makes extensive use of hypotaxis while Chinese syntax parataxis; English sentence is typical of tree-type structure with different parts connected like branches and sub-branches to the trunk line while Chinese discourse evolves freely in a wave-like manner. The techniques of translating long sentences from Chinese to English include sentence cutting and the use of prepositional phrase, participle phrase, subordinate attributive clause and adverbial clause, and appositive, etc. These techniques enable the translation to conform to the way of expression of English language and sound like an essay written by an English native speaker.
