Different ways of thinking in China and the West caused the structural differences in English and Chinese sentences. Translating long sentences is not easy. Compared to Chinese, English sentences are longer and more complex in structure, which brings further difficulties in translating long English sentences into Chinese. In the translation of The Old Nurse’s Story, the translator encountered a lot of long sentences, and used some simple techniques to translate them. Therefore, the author sets out to explore the techniques of translating English long sentences, using sentences from this novel as illustrations. In view to their respective characteristics of English and Chinese, the author summarizes several techniques of translating long English sentences, on the basis of a comparative analysis of the author’s own translation of The Old Nurse’s Story and Liang Yuchun’s version. The techniques thus worked out are sequential translation, reversing translation, sentence division and comprehensive method.
