It has been found that the improvement of productivity level and comprehensive national power depends on not merely the development of science and technology but also the humanities and social sciences. As an important channel of spreading humanities and social science, liberal arts education plays an irreplaceable role in improving college students' cultural quality and strengthening the cohesion of our country and nation. Therefore, liberal arts education in Chinese universities plays an important role in the personal, social and national development.Since the 20th century, the liberal arts education in Chinese universities has been developed rapidly, it has initially come into being a liberal arts education system with considerable scale and complete class hierarchy. However, for the present development situation of subjects, the status and role of liberal arts education still haven't been paid much attention. At present, being influenced by many internal and external factors, liberal arts education in Chinese universities hasn't yet taken its'responsibilities of cultivating students' humanities spirit, advocating humanity so that it has deviated from its deserved function.From the needs of the era, this paper claims that the essence of western humanistic education is to cultivate students' humane spirit, shape students' complete personality. Then it reflects and reshapes the essence and functions of the liberal arts education in our universities on this basis. Finally, this paper points out that we should take some measures to implement the essence and functions of liberal arts education, such as vigorously cultivating the students' humane spirit, strengthening the construction of universities' culture and so on. As it is not only a major theoretical problem but also an urgent practical problem, this paper expects to make a research on these problems so that it can help to construct liberal arts education which adapts to the situation of our country.
