Chinese Transfer On Secondary Vocational School Student's English And Their Reading Efficiency

Now in our foreign language teaching, especially in English teaching, so many language teachers or trainers would exclude mother tongue (Chinese) from the process of foreign language acquisition. They believe that the best way to learn English is to let the students learn it in the pure target language environment for developing the English thinking habits and learn authentic English. However, the efficiency is not as they expect. And there are a lot of discussions about the role of language transfer in the field of linguistics. The author believes that people cannot abandon the mother tongue in foreign language teaching process and should make full use of it according to the actual learning situation. But according to the result of key word search for"language transfer"and"secondary vocational students'English reading", there isn't any report of empirical research of native language's transfer on secondary vocational students'English through reading on the Chinese Internet (e.g. search engine Baidu and Google). Therefore, this thesis attempts to find out if native language (Chinese) is good for the secondary vocational students'English reading comprehension and if it can help improve their English reading efficiency. Through the survey and English reading experiment, this is made manifest and discussed of its significance.The study is based on the relative theories in question, with references of previous studies, the data of survey and the reading experiment. 134 students and 96 students in Grade One from Taicang Secondary Vocational School took part in the survey and English reading experiment respectively. Then the data was summarized and analyzed with Word 2003 and Excel 2003. The result shows: 1. Generally speaking, native language (Chinese) is good for the secondary vocational student's English reading comprehension, and whatever kind of Chinese tips is good for improving the students'reading grades. 2. Native language's transfer is influnced by the secondary vocational students'existing English levels. The students on higher levels can make better use of native language to improve their English reading comprehension. 3. The students who are in different English level groups have different process in improving their efficiency according to the three different Chinese tips—(New words meaning, Cultural background knowledge and article translation in Chinese). Article translation in Chinese is better for high-level students. Cultural background knowledge in Chinese is better for low and medium English levels students.
