Classroom teaching assessment is an important content of teaching evaluation system. A scientific and reasonable assessment criterion is the key to the healthy development of education. The new curriculum reform has been tentatively applied for nearly ten years. During this period, some achievements on our elementary English classroom assessment have been reached. However, there is still a gap between the goal and the actual practice to realize the concept. There are also some problems that need to be resolved. Our current English classroom teaching assessment cannot fulfill its functions. Our elementary English classroom assessment concept advocated by the new curriculum is still not obvious. Our English classroom teaching assessment system is not systematic. Therefore, it needs to be improved.The logical writing of this dissertation is like this: first, it raises the question of the research. Following the question, it describes the former studies on the elementary classroom teaching assessment in foreign countries and in China. Then an investigation is conducted into the current situation of the elementary English classroom teaching assessment in our country. Based on these are the analyses and discussions about the Chinese current situation of the elementary English classroom teaching assessment. By analyzing the problems in our current English classroom teaching assessment, the author proposes to build a new elementary English classroom teaching assessment system, and also gives some ideas and suggestions.This dissertation includes six parts.Part One is the introduction. It deals with the background and the motivation of the research, including the content, the goal of the research, and the reasons why the topic has been chosen.Part Two is literature review. In this part, the author gives classification, review and analysis about the domestic and overseas literatures concerning classroom assessment. First, it gives the definitions of some very important related concepts of the research, including"classroom teaching","teaching assessment"and"classroom teaching assessment". Then, the author divides the literature review into two parts: domestic literature and overseas literature. After that, the current situations of the overseas and domestic elementary English classroom teaching assessment are introduced respectively. By doing this, the author tries to identify the problems and the limitations in the former researches,which later become the questions of this research. What are the effects of our current elementary English classroom teaching assessment in practice? Is our current elementary English classroom teaching assessment system scientific and satisfactory? Does it have any practical values? Based on these questions, this research hypothesis has been established .Part There is the theoretical basis of the research. It gives the interpretation and description of some theories which this research is based on. The theories include"Constructivism Learning Theory","Second Language Acquisition (SLA) Research"and"Post-modernism Curriculum Theories".Part Four is the research design. In this part, according to the literature review and the theoretical basis of the research,the research questions, the research hypothesis, and the research content are presented. Research methods and procedures have also been stated. Research methods include testing, questionnaires, interviews and observations.Part Five is an analysis on the data and results of the investigations. This part is one of the main contents of this research. Through student testing, questionnaires, interviews and classroom teaching observations, an analysis on the data and results of the investigations has been done.Part Six is discussions and proposals on the results of the investigations. This part is also one of the main contents of this research. The discussions of our current elementary English classroom teaching assessment system have been done; meanwhile, some problems and causes have been identified. According to our current situations, a new professional and useful elementary English classroom teaching assessment system needs to be established. And some ideas and suggestions about its implementation have been given.Part Seven is the conclusion of this research. After a series of reviewing, testing, exploring, surveys, discussions and observations, the author has reached the conclusion: It is very necessary to build a new scientific professional and useful elementary English classroom teaching assessment system. Of course, the assessment system must be practical and valuable. So this research also raises some proposals as to how to carry it out. Considering the limitation of the research, the author suggests some ideas about further studies in this respect.
