" Outline of great books" is an important column as well as an indispensable part in the experimental Chinese textbooks designed under the guidance of Junior Middle School Compulsory Education Curriculum Standards published by PEP. In the light of the curriculum standards, at the 7-to-9 grade stage, compilers elaborately bring extracurricular reading into the textbook layout system and recommend 3 great books to students every semester for the sake of emphasizing the importance of extracurricular reading. As an important guide to students'extracurricular reading, "outline of great books" provides a new platform for students. Teachers should make full and flexible use of textbooks in classroom teaching to usher in a wider reading horizon for students, to help students draw wisdom & power from reading and perfect their lofty personality, and to make students become pleased readers.Apparently, it's of significance to read great books. However, in the eyes of frontline Chinese teachers in junior middle schools, "Outline of Great Books" is likely to become formalistic owing to its large scale, long time, low efficiency and poor operability. Nowadays, there exists a worrying situation in students'reading great books, which will make it difficult to totally improve students'Chinese accomplishment as required in the new curriculum standards. In this paper, based on the new curriculum rationale, the author probes into the ways to teaching the outline of great books, reflects upon the puzzlement in teaching the outline of great books in junior middle schools, summarizes gains and losses in teaching activities and seeks feasible implementation strategies to construct a teacher-led, student-centered and textbook-dependent teaching model.
