There are many problems in the traditional language courses evaluation systems. For instance: the evaluation subject and evaluation indicator is single; paid too much emphasis on the evaluation results, and lack of the process evaluation; much more emphasis are paid on the distinguish and selection functions of evaluation system: much more focus are on the quantities but ignore the quality assessment .The new curriculum reform advocates to establish a evaluation method, which is conductive to the students'growth. And especially emphasizes"the multiple evaluation methods"and"enhance formative evaluation methods". In the 1980's, a new evaluation method which is called portfolio evaluation method came out in a foreign educational evaluation reform movement. Portfolio evaluation method belongs to the qualitative evaluation method, and it is also in accord with the concept of comprehensive curriculum evaluation. This method is also clearly promoted in the"language curriculum standards". It is encouraged to accept the portfolio, so this method is widely welcomed by the general educators in china.As the portfolio evaluation method is not included in the traditional evaluation system, the cognition of this evaluation method is not deep enough and the application of portfolio is still on the test and exploratory stage. This paper focuses on the exploration of the application of portfolio in language subject. First of all, elaborate the research background of portfolio and the reason of why portfolio is so widely concerned. Furthermore, describe portfolio'connotation, types, functions and features. At last, elaborated the three main stages of establishing language portfolio, and describe how to use the portfolio in low, medium and high three different levels in detail. Then, in practice, based on"language curriculum standards", combined with the teaching target and actual needs of students in classes, establish literacy portfolio in the lower grades, reading portfolio in medium grades and assignments portfolio in high grades. Those three kinds of portfolio belong to process portfolio but it also have display function. Through special practical operation, we summed up many advantages of language portfolio. However, we also found some issues in the practice process and put forward some reasonable proposals.
