Based on the basic standpoint of historical materialism, the basic concepts and methods of dialectical materialism and the theory of ideological and political Education, adhering to the scientific and historical combination of theoretical and practical principles of unity.The Paper compares the ideological and political education between China and America in different social systems and historical cultural background by rational investigation, especially focusing on methods and functions from the perspective of the analysis, comparison, refining and summary. On this basis, the paper is designed to assimilate and draw from the successful experiences of the ideological and political education in America, to enrich the present ideological and political education system in China.The first part of the paper expounds the research status of the comparative study of ideological and political education between China and America in recent years, as well as the research results carried out by the domestic and foreign scholars in related fields, with the aim to explore challenges and opportunities of the ideological and political education under the background of multicultural.The second part of the paper reviews the different methods of ideological and political education between China and America during different historical periods, and then conducts a comparative analysis. Based on the study of the development process of ideological and political education, the paper proposes that method is the central link, and people shall use the methods such as investigation and analysis, adjust the assessment, summary feedback, and practical forecasting to grasp the information, and also to raise the education plan to perfect the methodology of ideological and political education.Under the perspective of the social functions and individual functions of ideological and political education, the third part of the paper analyzes the difference and similarity on economic functions, political functions, cultural functions and individual development functions of the ideological and political education of China and America, and clarifies the multifaceted and developmental characteristics of function of the ideological and political education.By the ways of comparison, analysis, research and summary, the forth part of the paper proposes that we shall critically inheritance and absorb the advanced methods of foreign country's ideological and political education, and improve its relevance and effectiveness, with the purpose to benefit China's ideological and political education on its methods and function.
