From the last century since the eighties, more and more scholars home and abroad put their attention on the performance of the team, and they made remarkable achievements. But their study focused on the management team, work team and R & D team, few studies on the research team. With the development of science and technology, scientific research problems become more and more integrated, the organization of the small team is clearly difficult to adapt to the challenges of openness of research, while the research team which emphasis on team wisdom adapt the changes and requirements of scientific research. University research team as our research team in a vital force, whether or not its role into full play is important to China's science and technology.Research team has many features: formal authority within the research team is weak, but output has a high content of the theory of innovation and knowledge compared with the other team, these features make the leadership of the research team's research is important but very difficult. This research will review relevant literature at home and abroad, reveals the transformational leadership, team heterogeneity, organizational commitment, team communication and team performance's relationship, established theoretical models and verified it through the questionnaire survey.This research designed questionnaire of transformational leadership, organizational commitment, team communication and team performance, surveyed 33 university research teams which the National Natural Science Foundation supported. In this study, we used statistical software concluding SPSS 15.0 and LISREL8.0, using factor analysis, reliability analysis, correlation analysis and structural equation model and other methods, verified the theoretical model and research hypotheses. The results showed: transformational leadership has a positive influence to organizational commitment; transformational leadership has a positive influence to team communication; transformational leadership has positive impact on team performance; some of the characteristics of team heterogeneity has a direct influence on team communication; organizational commitment and team communication has a positive influence on team performance; team communication and organizational commitment play a intermediary role in the process while transformational leadership influenced team performance. Finally point out the limitations of this study and future research directions.
