Rural poverty is a problem which has always been gaining much attention around the worldand actively studied by researchers in various countries. Facing today's dual structure of urban andrural economy, this problem takes on some characteristics of the new era. As a result, our first taskin poverty reduction and elimination is to indentify the poverty-stricken population. Only byaccurately identifying the poor, can the poverty reduction policies and programs be accuratelyaimed at the poor. In this paper, the large sample of Chinese Health and Nutrition Survey-CHNShousehold survey dataset in2000,2004and2006are used and the Alkire and Fostermultidimensional poverty measurement method is used to conduct study on the multidimensionalpoverty issue in rural areas in China. This paper mainly conducts analyses in the following four aspects: First, establish necessaryindexes of multidimensional poverty based on "Chinese Health and Nutrition Survey" householdsurvey data by extracting the value of the households in each dimension and defining a criterionaccording to which the poor are identified. The poverty incidence rate and average deprivationquintile are calculated based on whether or not each individual or family is poor in each dimension.Secondly, conduct aggregation to obtain multidimensional poverty index. Finally, this paperconducts decomposition on multidimensional poverty according to the areas (provinces) anddimensions in order to compare multidimensional poverty in the rural areas in various provincesand find the differences as well as observe the poverty status in sustenance, safety, and competencyof the rural areas in China. Dynamic and trend analyses according to the results of the three years(2000,2004and2006) clearly show the changes in rural poverty status in China and the effectsof China's rural poverty reduction.According to the empirical study on rural multidimensional poverty, the following basicconclusions are achieved: health and medical facilities, electrical appliance and drinking watercontribute the most to multidimensional poverty index among all the relevant factors influencingrural multidimensional poverty. By categorizing and decomposing the poverty status according toregions (9provinces are picked from CHNS data) this paper finds out that the contribute tomultidimensional poverty index of Guizhou and Guangxi Province is higher, the poverty is more severely, thus we ought to put more efforts to strengthen input into health facilities and otherinfrastructure construction in Guiyang to actively carry out poverty reduction.Chinese governmentshould continue the development of the western development and construction. Poverty reductionpolicy also needs to take actively in Guiyang.
