The Mystery of Edwin Drood is the first but unfinished detective story of CharlesDickens, an English realistic literary writer in20th century. The novel is translated by eightstudents, and the eighteenth to twenty-first chapter is by me. This translation report is guidedby Eugene Nada’s Functional Equivalence Theory and based on the comparison of the XiangXingyao and Wu Deyi’s translation. The core view of this paper is that the translation shouldkeep on four rules: the expressive vocabulary, the similar style of the language, the identicalstyle of the text and the close connotation of the culture. In later translation, first, we should pay attention to comprehensively souring the relatedmaterials of the task, intending to understand the text with accuracy and establish thedirection of the translation. Second, we should try to extensively reading the theory, whichhelps us manipulate the problems we meet. Third, we should frequently take practice in orderto maintain the translation at a stable level. Also we should communicate with others andlearn from them. All of above aspects is useful to improve our translation skills and help usachieve the high-quality translation.
