Strategies For Official Press Conference Interpreting From The Perspective Of Interpretive Theory

Recently, the Chinese government holds various international and regional pressconferences in each year. Every March, the press conferences held by the Foreign Ministryduring the National People’s Congress (NPC) and the Chinese People’s PoliticalConsultative Conference (CPPCC) draw more and more attention from the world. Thisdoes not only set higher demand for interpreters, but also provides a new research field forinterpreting studies. The subject of this thesis is official press conference interpreting. Onone hand, interpreters act as a "bridge" for foreign journalists and speakers; on the otherhand, the study on press conference interpreting (PCI) is far from being enough. This paper,based on the Interpretive Theory, with the PCI during the NPC and the CPPCC sessionsfrom2000-2010as the case, is to explore what strategies the interpreters use at the officialpress conferences. Through research, we find that during the interpreting process of officialpress conferences, interpreters often employ six strategies, namely, integrating the mainpoints, semantic explanation, information supplement, logical processing, restructuringsentences, and cultural adaptation, so as to meet the requirement of "being faithful tosense". These six strategies can provide reference for interpretation learners.
