New Practical Chinese Reader,edited by Liu xun, is a comprehensive textbook of Chinese as a Foreign Language of great impact. This book is a very unique and successful foreign languge teaching materials, with unique characteritics in the framework of teaching design, materials selection, and training system.Having published for more than20years, it’s easy to see its great influence by its popular use of this book, however, with the development of the times and the continuously exploration on the Chinese as a second language teaching in the discipline of theretical research and teaching practice, New Practical Chinese Reader (hereinafer New Practical for short) also showed some inadequacies in words and practices, therefor, it comes to be a neccessary task to edit a new generation of listening, speaking, reading and writing the integration of Chinese textbooks with a more perfect in the new era.It is an important and meaningful work to analyze the strengths of the New Practical Chinese Reader and its writing experience to inherit and absorb, as well as the analysis of the weaknesses and shortcomings and improvements.This dissertation gives an analysis of the New Practical Chinese Reader in writing theory, teaching materials structure, contents, vocabulary, language points, exercises, and culture, indicating that it has a good implementation in the principle of structure, function and culture.It recogizes the strengths of its choice in materials and language points and the great attention to the principles of communication and the recycling to reproduce, and also points out the lack of texts arrangment, vocabulary and exercises, the anthenticity fun of texts needs to be strengthened as well. The teaching materials remain the main line of the knowledge system, and an extension of the knowledge, and its function expand out on the basis of the knowledge system, and is still unable to get rid of a subsidiary role. Insisted the leaners to be centered, while actually most of the exercises are learners around the structure of language activities, not exercises real departure from the learners’ communicative needs, therefor, it’s kind of lack of playing the students’ autonomy, initiative and creative abilities.Based on this, this dissertation put forward some suggestions for a new generation of teaching materials of listening, speaking, reading and writing:in editing the text books of Chinese as a foreign language, more importance should be attached to the learning process, the function and meaning of language, the trueness and nature of langwage, the ability of the cross-culture, the personality of characters, and the leaning strategies.
