Many Vietnamese students looking to learn Chinese as a second language are challenged by the complexity, uniqueness and variability of this task. The results of such efforts on the part of Vietnamese students point out how complex and difficult an effort such learning can be. It is worthwhile to examine both the differences between these two languages as well as their apparent similarities-and to consider in detail the point of view of the learners. In order to review the progress and success on the part of students from Ho Chi Minh Normal University and Hanoi University of Foriegn Studies,100Vietnamese students participated in a survey to both examine the challenges and stages in their learning of Chinese as a second language as well as to make suggestions to improve the efforts of future students.Following an Introduction which reviews the methods used in this survey as well as a summary of previous research on this topic, this paper is divided into three sections:first, an examination of the Han (Chinese) language along with its structure; second, an analysis of the similaries as well as some of the differences between Chinese and Vietnamese, indicating the structure and functions in each language; and third, a summary of the success achieved by Vietnamese students including both an analysis of the attitudes and feelings of these students and suggestions to improve the learning process for future students.
