With China’s increasing economic status and political influence, the premier’spress conferences after the conclusion of the two sessions (the National People’sCongress and CPPCC Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference) since1991have drawn increasing attention from Chinese and foreign media. The interpretationon the premier’s press conference not only bridges the understanding between foreignjournalists and the spokesman, but also provides new research field for interpretingresearchers. On one hand, with the wide application of modern media, the videotapes and thetranscripts of the press conference interpretation are available which provide valuablematerial to analyze different context variables in government press conferenceinterpretation. On the other hand, the number of essays and monographs by Chineseand foreign scholars on context and interpretation is on the increase, hence to analyzeinterpreting activity using the theory of context forms a new perspective. However, the context theory is all-inclusive and interdisciplinary, there is no systematic orcomprehensive generalization of context variables and its impact on interpretation.thus this thesis aims to discuss government press conference interpretation from theperspective of context theory. This thesis will analyze the videotapes and transcripts of Premier Wen’s PressConference Interpretation after the conclusion of the Two Sessions (NPC and CPPCC)from2003to2011from linguistic context, situational context and cultural context’sperspective, to elaborate how contextual features are reflected in GPCI and affectinterpreter’s diction, conveying the precise information and emotion, political standsand culture, and hopefully raise interpreting participators’ as well as scholars’awareness of context’s importance and provide some tactics for GPCI practice andteaching.
