Literature translation is a process of artistic recreation, which breaks through thebarriers of languages, cultures, regions as well as times. There’s no denying that it is achallenging task for an eastern translator in Asia to “cook rare steak”, getting the gistof the original work, achieving the unity of form and spirit, which literally photocopythe internal monologue of the author. This thesis aims to explore a way out to addressthe challenge ultimately.David Baldacci, as a Suspense novelist, gets a firm footing in the circle ofAmerican literature by means of his great talents and distinguishing ways of thinking. The ex-president Bill Clinton of the U.S. gave him credit for his novel, The SimpleTruth, which was described as his “favorite novel in1999”.His other works, such as Total Control, The Winner, Wish You Well, Last ManStanding, The Christmas Train, Split Second, Hour Game, etc., had been the topbestsellers of the year from The New York Times and others authoritative magazines.David Baldacci has become a distinctively promising writer in the American literatureworld, following the step of Stephen Edwin King, Thomas Harris, Sidney Sheldon, as well as Harlan Coben. This thesis is based on his novel, The Whole Truth published in2008, whichcomprises one hundred chapters in total. The novel is full of thrills, nervousness andmiseries, appealing to readers deeply, and factors involving politics, economy, laws, reality make the plots more complicated. It is set against a backdrop of The Cold War,where readers could be easily reminded of the tricky and chaotic international contextgoing back to that period of time. Great effort is made to reveal the historical moments, urging the public to focus on the texture of life for ordinary people. It is worthwhile totranslate the novel from the perspective of reality and society. This thesis is based on the first nine chapters. During the translation process, varied translations skills like Amplification, Omission, Division, Combination,Conversion, Inversion, Repetition, etc., are applied and theories are put into practice. Apure, natural, smooth Chinese version enjoys top priority. Translators are meant to bemen who are invisible behind the writer.Chapter one offers the task description, content selection, aims and values.Chapter two gives a specific description of the whole translation process. Chapter threefocuses on the case analysis in terms of translation skills. In chapter four, a conclusionis drawn on the translation experience.
