Theme unit teaching concept is based on the thoery of teaching language as a whole,which is adopted by many countried in the process of second language textbooks designing.Under the guidance of theme unit teaching concept, the textbook consists of several units,each unit with a particular theme, and all the language practice related to the theme. There arecertain overlaps in the practice of various language skills, coordinating listening, speaking,reading and writing. In the meanwhile, the whole class is treated as a small society, creating areal language environment for students to practice language according to the content in thetextbook.The gente "(people) is a Spanish textbook published by the Spanish difusion publishinggroup. This series of teaching material is divided into3volumes, equipped with teachers’book and CD. As a set of language teaching material written by the Spanish experts forforeigners to learn Spanish, the characteristics of the book relies on communicative teachingapproach, which is now very popular in foreign language teaching. In accordance with thetheme of each unit, through the colourful pictures, flexible practice and interaction betweenteacher and students, The theme unit teaching is intended to train students’ comprehensiveabilities, such as listening, speaking, reading and writing. At the same time because thecontent of the book is close to real life, and at the end of each unit there is a special essayabout culture, so that the students can now study to use, and in language learning increasetheir understanding of the western world. Also, this series of teaching material conforms tothe European language teaching and assessment framework common standards (Marco comuneuropeo DE referencia para la ensenanza/aprendizaje DE lenguas), so it can be applied toforeign Spanish grade exam for foreigners(i.e. DELE).This paper will make a systematic research on this set of textbooks through the followingperpectives: its designing concept, structure, framework and design method. Because thematerials is composed by each unit with several practice, and all the practices are divided intolanguage practice, vocabulary practice, grammar exercises, listening, and comprehensivepractice. The auther intends to analyse typical design method in each kind of practice, andsums up their advantages, from writing concept, the choice of language materials, culturalperspective, graphic design, nationality aspects, to supply advice and implication on theChinese teaching material designing for foreigners.
