Tactics Of Diplomatic Interpreting From The Perspective Of Interpretive Theory

Interpreting is a human activity of a history of over2000years, and interpreting as aprofession was developed since the1stWorld War. Currently, there are mainly two kinds ofinterpreting, consecutive interpreting and simultaneous interpreting according to the waysof transmission.The very influential Interpretive Theory was originated in the1960s in France whichcame directly from interpreting practices. The theory claimed that the interpreting was adynamic process including three steps, understanding of the sense of the original statement,de-verbalization and the re-expressing of the sense in target language. This is the core claimof the school of interpretive theory.Diplomatic interpreting is a special kind of interpreting for it concerns foreign policiesof a nation on many occasions. There are many sensitive topics in this specific kind ofinterpreting which lays a higher standard for the accuracy of an interpreter. Under greatpressure, interpreters tend to choose a word for word way of interpreting in order to avoidmaking mistakes. But in fact, this kind of interpreting may not be well understood by thetargeted audience. At the same time, due to the limited time the interpreter has, toremember all the words and make a linguistic interpreting is not possible. In order to tacklethis problem, this thesis tries to offer tactics in accordance with the Interpretative Theory byanalyzing the performances of the interpreters on several diplomatic occasions.
