With the development of society and an increase of world-wide communications, there is an urgent and abundant need for the information from English-speakingcountries, among which stories via news media forms the most important source.Correspondingly, the translation of news becomes increasingly vital. Soft news, withits entertaining function and diverse interests of target readers, has its peculiarrequirements both in contents and writing styles. Therefore, compared with hard news, which focuses on political report, the translating of soft news can not only achieve thelinguistic equivalence between source language (SL) and target language (TL), butalso adapt non-linguistic factors in source texts, which ultimately serve to satisfy theneed of target culture and readers. In view of the distinctive features and functions of soft news, the translationstrategies of soft news should be different from that of other genres. Based on thedetailed analysis of the three rules of Skopos theory as well as the textual features ofsoft news, the author explores the application of the three rules of Skopos theory:Skopos rule, intra-textual and inter-textual coherence. Then the translation strategies ofsoft news including abridgement, interpretation and reformation are discussed andsummarized. The author also makes a textual analysis of a large number of C-Eversions mainly from China Today, exemplifying the application of the three strategiesin soft news translation. The research results can provide reference for translation ofsuch texts.
