In this paper I will review the understanding and treatment of ascites due to cirrhosis both of the Traditional Chinese Medicine and the Modern Medicine through the literature review and discuss the value of the Nourishing kidney and Clearing liver-heat Decoction in the treatment of ascites due to cirrhosis patients whose disease types according to differentiation of syndromes is "deficiency of yin and stagnation of dampness"Method:Recalling the dynasties classic works of the Traditional Chinese Medicine, collecting the discussions and the Prescription of ascites diseases, to explore the source and meaning of the Nourishing kidney and Clearing liver-heat Decoction; searching papers published on CNKI during January2002and January2012with the key words "ascites due to cirrhosis","treatment of the Traditional Chinese Medicine","the Nourishing kidney and Clearing liver-heat Decoction", and "deficiency of yin", finishing material on the progress of diagnosis and treatment of ascites due to cirrhosis, analysising and comparisoning The same points and different points of the Nourishing kidney and Clearing liver-heat Decoction and other prescriptions which used to treating ascites due to cirrhosis patients whose disease types according to differentiation of syndromes is "deficiency of yin and stagnation of dampness"Results:1. Disease that has symptom like ascites has the special name such as "dampness","dampness disease","the abdomen distends and dampness disease suddenly","the abdomen distends and edema","general edema""ascites" and so on in ancient times. About pathogeny it mentioned luck arrhythmia(old water too much or less than), adverse environmental conditions of wind, cold, dryness, dampness, fire and summes-heat at tack ("invasion of interior by pathogenic factors", heat strong, fire strong, damp-heat depressing and steamed), qi is consumption (after serious i llness or diarrhea, postpartum, consumption) so that it can’t activating water, dampness immersion (take a bath just after dinner in a sweat) and so on. Since the Yuan Dynasty and the Ming Dynasty more and more people called kind of diseases which had symptom like the abdomen distends "tympanites" and only a little people talking about ascites specialized. Doctors have realized that using purgation to treat ascites may trauma qi so they gave up this treatment and treated ascites following the treanment of "tympanites"2.
