Many people all over the world begin to learn Chinese with the increase of China’s international status. The effectiveness of our Chinese teaching to foreigners is significant. They can communicate in Chinese after several months’learning. However, Chinese characters’ teaching effectiveness is not very satisfactory. Many learners think they are the most difficult especially for the students of non-Chinese culture circle. It relates to the characteristics of Chinese characters.This paper uses the questionnaire to analyze foreign students’ Chinese characters writing mistakes. The thesis is on the basis of previous research, making a few comments from the analysis of the structure of Chinese characters to Chinese characters’units.The thesis consists of five parts. The first chapter is about teaching Chinese characters in TCSL(Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages). It describes the position of teaching Chinese characters in TCSL and its current research.The second chapter gives an overview of Chinese characters. It’s about the characteristics and structure of Chinese characters. Chinese character is ideographic which is different from alphabetic writing. It also analyzes the structural units of Chinese characters.The third chapter is the analysis of foreigners’written mistakes in Chinese characters.The fourth chapter focuses on how to teach Chinese characters. It’s also the most important part of this paper. Stroke teaching is the basis, and component teaching is the transition. Then we can teach single component and compound. Finally, it simply introduces the importance of culture input.The final chapter is the practice. I design a teaching plan of Three Character Scripture combining with the teaching practice.
