Chinese characters are the only one kind of the oldest characters that have existed in the world by now. From the oracle bones inscription to the simplified Chinese characters, there is a long process in the history of Chinese characters. The history of the oracle bones inscription which appeared in Shang dynasty has been three thousand years. The mainly tendency of Chinese characters is simplification. The issue on the simplification of Chinese characters is very popular today. A lot of scholars have studied this problem and made great achievements. One purpose of the Chinese characters simplification is for the convenience of teaching. The teaching of Chinese characters is very important, not only in the ancient Chinese education, but also in the contemporary Chinese education. This paper is designed to study the issue of the merit and the weak point in the simplification of Chinese characters from the point of view of the teaching of Chinese characters. Chapter one is an introduction about the history of the simplification of Chinese characters, which focuses on the contemporary history of the simplification of Chinese characters. Chapter two discusses the dispute which is caused by the contemporary simplification of Chinese characters, and finds the shortage in the contemporary simplification of Chinese characters in the way of studying the methods of the simplification of Chinese characters. In addition, this Chapter also discusses whether the Chinese simplified characters should be abolished or not. Chapter three introduces the teaching of Chinese characters. First, it reviews the traditional Chinese character teaching. Then, it discusses the advantages and disadvantages about the teaching with the simplified Chinese characters and traditional Chinese characters in terms of students’ cognitive psychology. Finally, it concludes some strategies about the teaching of Chinese characters, which is available for the different stages in the contemporary Chinese education. In the basis of the problems that still have existed in the contemporary Chinese simplified characters, Chapter four puts forward some principles that the simplified Chinese characters should follow and some suggestions that Chinese characters should consult if they need further simplification in the future.
