The year2012is just the40th anniversary of the establishment of the normal diplomatic relations between China and Japan. As a part of the public diplomacy, the communication between the young people of the two sides has always been greatly supported by both countries. The contemporary Chinese young people’s view of Japan impacts directly on their exchange. The view’s rational faculty promotes it, enabling their friendship to develop smoothly from generation to generation. The Chinese young people’s view of Japan refers to their subjective understanding of the country. The article in question first elaborates the connotation and the concept of the view, and then analyses the concept of the point of the nation, the point of the peoples, the point of the culture and the point of the history concluded in the view respectively. Combining the characteristics of the relationship between China and Japan in different periods of the history, the article analyses in details the course during which the view has formed since the establishment of the People’s Republic of China and gives a brief account of the development of the view and then makes good theoretical preparations for the analysis of its current situation and its tendency of development in the future. The questionnaire is conducted mainly among the young people in Nanjing, involving those born in this city or vice versa. And it devides the young people into several groups according to their academic credentials、Japanese majors and non-Japanese majors, adds up the data and draws a conclusion that the Chinese young people achieve the imformation about Japan in many ways, particularly via the media; they do not have the same favourable impression as they did before, but they are not averse to its culture; their impression is influenced by the historical divergences, but the judgment of Japan is rational and objective relatively; there has been remarkable effect in public diplomacy, but the exchange in which the young folks of both sides are involved should be strengthened. By studying closely the data and the statistics, the article analyses the view both externally and internally. Thus, it intends to make an investigation of the problems occurred during the course of the formation of the view, recounts its impact on the relationship between both nations, and emphasizes the importance of having a rational view.At last, by studying the connotation of the rational view, it comes up with the necessity of building such a view in three fields:the communication between the two young generations; the co-operation of economy and culture; the harmony of the two countries. It also stresses that the two governments should enlarge the exchange scale and study China and Japan from the angle of their common history. The schools have the responsibility to help the students develop the rational view, and make them study Japan with an open mind. All in all, it puts forward some concrete measures to do so in order to promote their mutual understanding.
