Research On The Social Work Intervention For The Rehabilitation Of Adults With Intellectual Disabilities Under The Strength Perspective

Attention to vulnerable groups is a symbol of a civilized and progressive society, and the adults with intellectual disabilities need more care and help as the weakest in the vulnerable groups. Marxism insists starting from man and nature, man and society and their mutual relations, understands human nature and development scientificly, emphasises on human freedom, values and rights, and stresses the realization of human freedom and comprehensive development.Therefore, the rehabilitation of adults with intellectual disabilities is comprehensive, including medical rehabilitation, education rehabilitation, vocational rehabilitation and social rehabilitation. The rehabilitation of adults with intellectual disabilities is of great significance, not only to themselves, but also to their families and our society.With the development of society, our country has made some achievements in the rehabilitation of adults with intellectual disabilities, but in its infancy stage. On the one hand, not only the number of agencies for the rehabilitation of adults with intellectual disabilities is less, but also the nature of the agencies is more single with resources shortage; on the other hand, the rehabilitation work for adults with intellectual disabilities is lagging behind, the rehabilitation level of the workers is still lower.Due to the problem perspective, the rehabilitation work for adults with intellectual disabilities has focused on the problems and deficiencies existing in adults with intellectual disabilities, ignored their potential and environment resources, and not be set in their ecological environment. This has made the progress of the rehabilitation slower, and the rehabilitation effect less than ideal state.Based on the related research, this paper under the strengths perspective uses the methods of document research and field research, utilizes the social work’s helping concept and methods, and studys on the rehabilitation of adults with intellectual disabilities. This paper takes the ZG Rehabilitation Center in Jinan City and several adults with intellectual disabilities for example, and it is concerned about the potential of adults with intellectual disabilities and the environmental resources owned by them. Through analyzing the role of the strength resources, this paper discusses how to play the strength resources effect in the rehabilitation of adults with intellectual disabilities through the social work intervention to improve their comprehensive ability, to use social resources fully, to make the rehabilitation work more professional, and to make adults with intellectual disabilities return to the society finally.The study found that adults with intellectual disabilities had great potentialities that included personal traits\life skills\cognitive ability\interests and so on, and had rich social resources that included family\community\NGO\government and so on. But these strength resources have been ignored in the work of the rehabilitation of adults with intellectual disabilities. Therefore, the rehabilitation of adults with intellectual disabilities under the strength perspective is to integrate these strength resources, to develop the potentialities of adults with intellectual disabilities through making individualized training program, to develop the supporting role of the family through supplying case and group service, to enhance the employability of adults with intellectual disabilities through playing the role of NGO\government\society organizations, to improve social adaptability of adults with intellectual disabilities and build a favorable social atmosphere, through carrying out community work to establish the community home and to develop social activities.
