Autonomous learning ability is a major topic in the field oftoday’s educational psychology as well as a learning style greatlyadvocated in the new curriculum reform of our national elementaryeducation.Whether the students’learning style can transform frompassive learning to autonomous learning will decide the success orfailure of the curriculum reform. The new curriculum reform ofordinary high school has carried on for three years in ShanxiProvince. In this research the development of autonomous learningability was investigated at senior middle school in Shanxi provincein order to find the development characteristics, discuss theprogress and insufficiency of the current curriculum reform and putout suggestions on autonomous learning ability.The autonomous learning ability in the research was consideredas a kind of learning ability, referring to self driving the learningmotivation, consciously choicing learning contents,self regulatinglearning strategies, well managing learning time, actively creatinglearning environment and evaluating learning outcomes. In this study,“primary and secondary school students learning autonomyscale”compiled by Professor Pang Weiguo, who was influential inautonomous learning study, was used as the measurement tool forautonomous learning ability. This research took an ordinary highschool students as the research object and randomly selected anordinary and a prestigious class from every grade as participants.To find autonomous learning situation , the 373 participants wereinvestigated by questionnaire which was made up on sevendimensions including learning motivation,contents,methods,time,process, outcome and environment.Then combine the results of theinvestigation of students’autonomous learning ability and learningachievement to undertake preliminary discuss. Finally compare thedevelopment change of senior high school students’autonomouslearning ability before and after the new curriculum reform.Through the results of the survey and statistical analysis, theconclusions of this study were as follows:(1) High school students’autonomous learning ability is in themiddle level, and the development of autonomous learning in alldimensions is balanced.(2) The students in different grades are no difference in theoverall levels of autonomous learning.(3) The first grade students in the regular class and the key classare no difference in the levels of autonomous learning. The secondgrade students in the regular class are lower than the ones in thekey class in the levels of autonomous learning, and the third gradestudents are also.(4) The overall level of girls’autonomous learning is significantly higher than the boys and the overall level of liberal arts students’autonomous learning is higher than science students, both showingextremely significant difference.(5) The high school students’autonomous learning and academicperformance shows significant positive correlation.(6) To a certain extent, the new curriculum reform promotes thedevelopment of autonomous learning ability of high school students.
