Novels teaching in high school occupies an important position in the Chinese language teaching system. The novel teaching in high school now, however, is flawed on the teaching objectives, the teaching content and teaching methods. This situation is caused by both social and educational system, but more by the lack of language teachers’ ability. This "method of close reading" talked in this paper is based on Chinese and Western theories of close reading, with particular focus on the new achievements in the contemporary theory of close reading. It is such a method that based on the text, focused on verbalism analysis, committed to the subtle and profound language meaning, designed for the students as principal, aimed to improve students’ literary attainments and aesthetic ability, which is highly flexible, open and practical. The"method of close reading" applied in the novel teaching in high school can play a role in cultivating students’ subject consciousnes and connoisseurship, stimulating their creativity and improving their aesthetic attainments. This paper analyzes the application of this method from four stages, which are "looking into the word","dwelling on the blank space,""grasping the whole structure" and "analyzing the association by analogy". Finally, the thesis takes Lu Xun’s The Blessing as an example to work out an instructional design, which is intended to describe the actual operation of the "method of close reading".
