In the1980s, Dr. Howard Gardner from Harvard University putforward the theory of multiple intelligences in which he definedintelligence is not unique but multiple for everyone. And apart from thetwo types of basic intelligence: Verbal/Linguistic Intelligence andLogical/Mathematical Intelligence, there are other seven forms ofintelligence: Visual/Spatial Intelligence,Musical/Rhythmic Intelligence,Bodily/Kinesthetic Intelligence, Interpersonal Intelligence,Intrapersonal Intelligence, Naturalistic Intelligence and ExistentialIntelligence. In this paper, the author illustrates the advantages ofMultiple Intelligence Theory and tries to apply the theory to the readingpractice.This paper aims to explore a new form of English reading teachingcalled individualized teaching. In the course of the study, the authorput much emphasis on the analysis of students’ reading practicecombined with the Multiple Intelligence, expecting to arouse thestudents’interest in English reading,assist them to build up confidenceand gain the experience of achievement, so as to improve theirreading skills and reading level.The main contents include the following aspects:First, the research on Multiple Intelligence Theory and its guidingfunctions to English reading teaching.Second, the teaching practice on English reading in DonghuSenior School. This chapter is the key to the paper, in which the authorhas made great efforts to put the theory into practice. In this chapter,①Class reading teaching has been fully studied under theguidance of Multiple Intelligence Theory; ②English newspaper reading is added to the individualizedteaching as an auxiliary approach;③Individualized evaluation mechanism is used to promote theindividualized teaching effects on reading.Finally, the author draws conclusions about individualized readingteaching in English. Meanwhile, some teaching advice on this thesis isproposed and the author also reflects on the shortcomings of this studyin this chapter.
