The new curriculum standard has proposed that students should notonly gradually master the English language knowledge and skills tocultivate and improve the language proficiency, but also expand theirhorizons, gain knowledge, develop their personality and improve thehumanities to lay a good foundation for their lifelong learning andlifelong development through English language learning and languagepractice activities. Language is an urgent problem to be solved withthe immanence of globalization. To enable the students to acquire thislanguage as a tool and use it in real life, we should break through thetraditional concepts and make an active English classroom with theopen teaching concept, pluralistic teaching content and variousteaching approaches. This thesis attempts to explore a new approachin the English teaching reform grounded on the studies of the openteaching of English in primary schoolsIn this thesis, the author expounds the background and meaning ofopen English teaching in primary school from the following four aspects:To promote teaching reform, improve the class efficiency, realize thestudents’development and increase teachers attainments. And thenshe describes the concept of open teaching and its classification andfeatures. The author also states the concept of the class observationand its features and meaning. By using the method of classroomobservation, adopting the qualitative and quantitative methods, theauthor did research about the modes of the six classes in2011ShanghaiPrimary School English Teachers’ Teaching Competition. The authorcarried out observation and research about the six classes with differentobservation tables in five aspects: teaching material, teaching timeand space, teaching design, teaching organization mode andmanagement, class teaching evaluation. Through the analysis of six classes, the problems of open teaching in primary school are drawn:Some teaching materials are too difficult; some teachers place toomuch emphasis on extensive content and ignore the students’ abilities; Some teaching activities are lack of efficiency, the form is moreimportant than contents. Some teaching activities are lack of languagepractice and some teachers give the students just a few more quietmoments to think. The seating arrangement and exercise hierarchicaldesign also have room for improvement. So the English teachers shouldpay more attention to the resources of teaching methods and updatetheir conception of open teaching. They should focus on theaccumulation of teaching resources in real life and expand teachingcontent which can be related to ordinary life. And they need to takethe students as the center and consider their emotion experiences.According to the analysis, the author puts forwards: Though theEnglish teachers of primary school have open consciousness, they stillhave some problems in the implementation process. So, all the teachersshould broaden their thoughts, improve their professionalism, optimizethe teaching reservation and deepen the teaching analysis to developtheir ability of autonomous learning and improve the class efficiency.
