Illustration is a kind of visual arts and is bound with the text. And they join together to express writers’writing intentions. If it’s difficult to express the contents in the textbooks by using words, we can use the illustrations to help understand the contents. It is thus clear illustrations are the very important components of the textbooks. They are more attractive to students than characters.The author in this thesis is going to make a comprehensive and thorough analysis of the illustrations contained in New Standard English (for Junior High Schools), the textbooks published by Foreign Language Teaching and Research Press and used in Tianjin which is the third largest city. This paper not only makes an analysis of an overall situation of illustrations including the amount of illustrations, the forms of illustrations and illustration functions in English language skills but also concludes emphatically source culture and sexism features of New Standard English (NSE) textbook illustrations. Through the comprehensive and thorough analysis, it’s obvious to find the lack of source culture to some extent, especially some items and contents of source culture and the existence of sexism (with less women characters) in the textbook illustrations. Meanwhile, this paper also makes an investigation of teachers and concludes the importance of using illustrations of source culture and female characters. It thus summarizes the implementation of illustrations in Junior High School teaching with use of teaching cases mainly from perspectives of sou re culture and female characters.This paper is divided into five chapters. In chapter one, the author introduces the research background and the significance of the study briefly. Chapter two is literature review, which gives a brief overview of the literature of illustration researches at home and abroad. Meanwhile, it introduces the theories of illustration and culture, source culture and sexism, the relationship between illustration and culture. According to the analysis of quantities and contents of New Standard English textbook illustrations, chapter three indicates the overall situations of illustrations and source culture and sexism features of NSE textbook illustrations. Chapter four is the implementation of illustrations in English teaching mainly from perspectives of cultivations of students’language skills, source culture and female characters. It also analyzes the results of a teachers’questionnaire to find using illustrations of source culture and female characters (no sexism) are required by teachers and students in English learning and teaching. Chapter five is conclusion and limitation. It summarizes the conclusions and limitation of the thesis and gives some suggestions on how to solve the problems.
