As a comprehensive display of attainments of students’mother tongue, composition exerts huge influences on multi-norms of competence, in terms of writing ability, thinking ways and verbal expression, and it remains an integral part of exam subjects for testing mother tongue across the globe. For this reason, composition naturally becomes a top priority for mother-tongue teaching in different regions. With its object of study aimed at set-subject composition for college entrance examination at home and abroad, this thesis makes a detailed comparison concerning proposition of composition between China and illustrated nations and regions (mainly HKSAR, MSAR, Taiwan, US, France and Japan), by means of historical research and comparative method. In this way, it is should be understood clearly that what our advantages and shortcomings, furthermore, and we are supposed to advocate proper reference and perfect combination based on its characteristics, so as to give helpful guidance to China’s reform of set-subject composition and discover right solutions to problems. On basis of this thinking ways, the thesis can be divided into six chapters. Chapter1is the introduction which presents us with explanation of its background information, purposes and approaches, coupled with comparative analysis of research pointing to set-subject composition at home and abroad. Chapter2gives an overview of set-subject composition oversea. In this part, it provides a concise summary considering development and present state of set-subject composition at home and abroad, including Chinese mainland, HKSAR, MSAR, Taiwan, US, France and Japan, through which, we can have a good mastery of specific situations of compositions in different regions in order to make enough preparation for next parts.Chapter3,4, and5of this paper are the main body parts. Chapter3is the comparison of the composition proposition form, which is mainly discussed from questions classification, writing style, present situation and provisions of words. Chapter4is the comparison of different propositional style of a composition, which focuses on the breadth of the proposition and the depth of the implication. The first part summarizes the similarities of the breadth and depth in college entrance exam’s composition propositions among Hong Kong, Macao, Taiwan, and the U.S., France, Japan; therefore, the target theory "to develop students through improving the language ability" is raised. The second part compares the thoughts and concerns in the composition of the contents of the college entrance exam. This part also puts forward some expressions of it, which contains the narrow fields, the confined thoughts, the unclearness of proposition, and the foresight of conception; moreover, these expressions mislead the wrong value orientation that "people and article are separated". Chapter5is the comparison of composition proposition’s evaluation criteria. In this part, it first gives a brief overview of the evaluation standard and current status in the composition of college entrance examination from different places; then according to the above analysis, it confirms where the disparity exists. The last chapter was based on the analysis and comparison of the three preceding chapters, and concludes the enlightenment from the composition of the college entrance exam at home and abroad. It makes the transition and revolution of the college entrance exam’s composition proposition and the composition teaching ideas; meanwhile, it shows a prospect towards the value orientation of the college entrance exam’s composition proposition.
