Since the Development of Western China was launched in1999, the western region’s social, economic and sports development have witnessed rapid growth. To some degree, the number, scale and events of the national sports competitions hosted by the western provinces and municipalities can reflect the general situation of the allocation of sports resources in this region, which will in turn, has a direct impact on its sports development. With the methods of literature review, expert interviews, questionnaires and mathematic statistics, this paper investigated and analyzed the general situation of the national single-event sports competitions in the12western provinces and autonomous regions over the past decade, including the number, events, scale, funding, facilities, etc. Based on the analysis of the general situation of the allocation of sports resources in the western region, this paper focused on the reasons, difficulties and the deep-seated social and economic factors affecting the western region in hosting the sports events. The research of this kind can provide a reference for the improvement of the rationality of the allocation of sports resources in the western region, thus promoting the fast and stable development of sports in the region. This paper reached the following conclusions:1. Under the backdrop of the Development of Western China, the number of national single-event sports hosted by the12western provinces and autonomous regions increases year on year between2001and2010, but it only accounts for23.46%of the total number of the country. In view of the population and area of the12western provinces and autonomous regions, the ratio is still relatively low.2. Between2001and2010, the western region hosted mainly the domestic competitions, with the Olympic events outnumbering the non-Olympic ones. The main purpose of hosting sports competitions in the western region is to improve its strength in competitive sports. 3. In terms of the sports competitions held in the region, the12western provinces and autonomous regions differs from one another with respect to the number, events, management and infrastructure. The sports resources are mainly in Sichuan and Chongqing municipality, while they are relatively scarce in Ningxia and Tibet. Compared with other provinces and municipalities,Inner Mongolia, Xinjiang and Tibet benefited more from the policies of the Development of Western China.4. The major factors affecting the allocation of sports resources in the western region are the economy, government investment, policy and institutional mechanism. Given the fact that the western region is relatively less developed and the market mechanism has yet been established, the national sports events held in the region mainly depend on government investment and many of them end up with running a deficit.5. A hybrid mechanism combing government’s macro-control, market regulation and social participation should be adopted in allocating sports resources in the western region.
