The university portal website is being developed in a high speed, so the portal website has been built in all universities of different levels and types. However, if these university portal websites perform as they are expected? How a university portal website should be built efficiently to serve the customer better is a key issue. More and more evaluation methods on the portal website have been proposed in a traditional way which is dominated by qualitative analysis. In this thesis, we compare and find differences between the websites in U.S and China in the aspects of its content construction, technical support, and developmental direction by quantitative analysis. This will provide reference to help web-education improvement.Under this background, I analyze issues in the portal website, educational performance, performance indicator, the concepts of website evaluation criterion etc., on the basis of a large amount of literature. In the connection with the features of the university, I establish the criterion of performance indicators. I compare the three aspects:content construction, technical application, and expansibility.The sample websites in this paper are chosen from the100universities in U.S and the39"985" universities in China. For the content construction, the comparison is performed based on the usability, langrage, the construction of multi-media source, block setting, updating rate, expansion, and the organization of content. For the technical application, the comparison is performed based on the usage of web2.0tools and the establishment of web standards. For the expansibility, I rank the websites by their traffics.Observing the portal websites according to these indices, I we adopt comparative study method and give a statistical analysis to the obtained data. Further, I theoretically analyze these quantitative data by using educational technology and educational performance, and then the key points to the improvement of educational performance of a website are obtained.The innovation of our work lies on that it eliminates the ambiguity of traditional portal websites evaluation methods by using comparative study and data quantization. Our method more objectively studies the issues in the process of website construction and provides references for the study on portal website evaluation and construction/development of the website.Two problems are solved in our work. First, the establishment of performance indicator is mainly based on the combination of website evaluation criterion and performance indicator. Indicator selection is performed based on the comparison between the portal websites of universities in U.S and those of universities in China. Second, the construction items which may help to improve the educational performance are found by quantitative comparison of content and technical construction between the two countries.Actually, some universities in China build their websites by adopting the advanced experience from the universities in U.S, which shows the significance of our work.
