Taekwondo is a kind of competitive and combative sport mainlyutilizing hands and feet. It was enlisted as a demonstration project in the OlympicsGames in1988, established as an experimental event in the Olympics in Barcelona in1992and finally became a formal event in the Olympics in Sydney in2000.Taekwondo is not only a conventional martial art, a way to build up body, butalso a modern sport of entertainment, health improvement, competition and spiritualcultivation. It crosses many disciplines such as mechanics, strategics, medicine, philosophy, ethics, etc. Through performances and combats, taekwondo aims tostrengthen muscles and willpower, shape the courtesy and morality, the core of whichlies in mental exercises and spiritual cultivation. Therefore, a research ontaekwondo’s promotion of teenagers’ all-around development could be of highsignificance. This dissertation adopts the methods of literature consultation, investigation, interviews and logic analysis, and selects adolescent practicing groups fromtaekwondo clubs and students taking taekwondo classes in elementary and middleschools, all from Jinniu district of the city of Chengdu, as studying objects. It is foundthat the taekwondo practice among teenagers in the specific district is decent andcontributes to their physical development. In physical improvement, taekwondopractice effectively improves the teenagers’ flexility, sensitivity and strength, and inmental development, it helps to increase their ability of anti-frustration andself-confidence, improve interpersonal relationships, shape their courtesy andmorality, and scientifically control personal emotions.Meanwhile, some certain facts should be noticed such as the big differentiationin male female ratio among practicers and low level of aggregation of coaches. Sometaekwondo coaches’ improper individual quality and ideological knowledge misleadsome practicers to take taekwondo as a violent combating means. It is a problem outof bad coaching and also from leaders’ false cognition of taekwondo organizations.Based on the facts above, this dissertation puts forward several points ofsuggestions for taekwondo education and training for teenagers. First, themanagement of taekwondo training markets should be regulated. Second, a righteous cognition of taekwondo by teenagers should be accomplished. Third, competitionresources should be optimized and an interactive promotion mechanism should bebuilt so that development could be achieved through competitions. Fourth, theprofessional ability and humanistic quality of coaches and trainers should beincreased. Fifth, extension of taekwondo in elementary and middle schools should beintensified.
